Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
|
We’re happy you’ve come to learn more about the treatment we have to offer for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder - Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, as it’s affectionately called. It’s really state-of-the-art treatment. Research shows it to be one of the most effective forms of treatment when delivered in a comprehensive treatment program. That is just what we have here at the Center for Behavioral Medicine.
· Individual therapy – Each patient will have a primary therapist to develop and monitor the treatment plan. The primary therapist can be the patient’s current therapist, if they are trained in DBT, or a member of our CBM team. Any mental health professional may refer a patient to the DBT Program.
· Skills training modules - All four skills modules are taught during weekly classes over a 6-month cycle. Individuals are encouraged to participate in two complete cycles. Modules cover Interpersonal Effectiveness, Core Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation, and Distress Tolerance skills. New members may join a group during any of the Core Mindfulness modules.
· Phone consultations - An important part of DBT is having therapists available for skills coaching on the phone. This helps to assure that individuals have the skills they need to manage situations effectively.
· DBT Consultation Team Meetings - To ensure that the structure of each person’s treatment is maintained, the consultation team meets weekly for case review, ongoing training and supervision. In addition to the primary therapist, team members may include the DBT Program director, therapists, and a psychiatrist.
· Ancillary Support Services – These services include psychiatric consultation to review medication issues and referral for inpatient services, when needed.
What is the goal of DBT? Helping you create a life worth living! How do we help? We teach skills, skills and more skills.
Skills for self awareness Skills for correcting problem patterns of thinking Skills for managing roller-coaster emotions Skills for developing and maintaining successful relationships Skills for decreasing unwanted or unmanageable anger
