We are happy you have come to learn more about the treatment we have to offer for individuals with borderline personality disorder or similar problems with emotion regulation. The treatment is called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Research shows it to be one of the most effective forms of therapy when delivered through a comprehensive treatment program. This is just what we have here at the Center for Behavioral Medicine. Comprehensive DBT contains five components:
Individual Therapy: Each client has a primary DBT therapist to develop and monitor the treatment plan. Clients meet with their individual therapist weekly.
Skills Training Group: This group teaches four modules of skills during weekly classes that occur over a six-month cycle. Clients are encouraged to participate in two complete cycles. The modules cover skills in the areas of Core Mindfulness, Interpersonal Effectiveness, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Effectiveness.
Skills Coaching: An important part of DBT is having therapists available for skills coaching outside of session. This helps assure that clients have the skills they need to manage situations effectively.
DBT Consultation Team Meetings: To ensure that the structure of each client's treatment is maintained, all DBT therapists participate in weekly consultation team meetings.
Ancillary Support Services: These may include psychiatric consultation to follow medications, or referral for inpatient services if needed.
The goal of DBT is to help you create a life worth living! We do this through teaching skills for:
correcting problematic patterns in thinking
managing roller coaster emotions
developing and maintaining successful relationships
decreasing unwanted or unmanageable anger
